This is the outage that does not end on a schedule. Every other backup guide here quietly assumes you can refuel, and that assumption is what fails first: fuel is finite, stations run dry, and a generator with a full tank is a countdown rather than a supply. So the ranking changes. What matters is the energy you can put back without anyone delivering anything (solar input you own), and how many years the hardware survives being cycled every single day (cell chemistry and cycle life). Wattage still matters, but it is not what decides this one.

How this recommendation is built

This is a recommendation layer over the separate category schemas — it compares solutions, it does not merge them into one spec table. Global disqualifiers run first, then each category is filtered and ranked within itself, then results are presented in category groups with an explicit tradeoff summary. Categories are compared only on shared, user-facing axes (indoor-safety, fumes, noise, output, runtime model, setup) — watt-hours are never equated with gallons, and no runtime hours are invented.

A battery station with real solar input is the only item here that keeps working without anyone delivering anything, which is why it ranks first despite a generator being able to carry more load. A multi-fuel generator is worth having as a bridge for heavy jobs and grey weather, but it is a consumable: rank it on what fuel it can store rather than what it can start. RV solar kits do the replenishment job for a 12 V bank and nothing else, and they have to be installed long before the day you need them.

Safety

Read before buying a fuel option. Generators are outdoor-only, permanently, and carbon monoxide does not become less lethal because the situation is serious. Never run one indoors, in a garage, or near a window or vent, and never connect one to house circuits without a properly installed transfer switch. Store fuel per your local fire code rather than in whatever volume seems prudent, and note that gasoline degrades in months while propane does not.
